The Stockport Economy

Stockport is home to one of the most competitive economies in the North West, according to a study by the Cardiff School of Management who were looking at economic competitiveness throughout the UK. Stockport gained the 3rd highest rating in Greater Manchester and was also ranked the 7th highest in the whole of the North West.  Over recent years, Stockport's economy has enjoyed a period of growth and now the borough plays a key role in the region's economy.  A total of 11,557 business units were recorded in Stockport by the ABI in 2005 and the sector with the largest representation was finance, insurance and banking.  This group accounted for 35% of the total businesses in the borough. When considering business units the second largest sector was distribution, hotels and restaurants.

Stockport has a highly skilled, productive and dedicated work force who have played a key role in attracting well known business names into Stockport and who have ensured that high-quality products leave the Borough for all corners of the world. There are 280,600 people resident in the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport according to the Annual Population Survey (Jan 06-Dec 06) with a high representation of managers and professionals amongst this total.
Economic activity in the area is high with 150,700 residents economically active. This represents 83.5% of the boroughs total compared with 76.7% in the North West and 78.6% in Great Britain.

Transport Links

Stockport is ideally located within an excellent transport network. The town centre is adjacent to Junction 1 of the M60 Manchester Orbital Motorway which links to the M62 to the east and west and the M6 to the North and South. Manchester Airport is only a ten-minute drive away.

The recent £3.5 million refurbishment of the railway station provides excellent train connections with a journey direct to London taking two and a half hours. Plans are also underway to bring the Metrolink tram system to Stockport via Heaton Mersey within the next few years.
