City Bloc Climbing Centre, Leeds

Located at our Airedale Site on Kitson Road, Leeds and founded in 2009, our tenant City Bloc is a state-of-the-art indoor climbing centre and is the brainchild of four former members of the British Bouldering Team. Between them there isn’t much about the world of climbing that they don’t know, having spent the last four decades competing all over the world, building unrivalled experience and knowledge. 

Towngate’s relationship with The City Climbing Company commenced when the neighbouring tenant; LS-TEN (Leeds Skatepark) introduced them to us.  They are now well established within the ground floor of Unit 1, The Airedale Industrial Estate, Hunslet, Leeds and have been under lease since the Summer of 2020, albeit we have known them longer.

Earlier this year we called into the centre as part of our scheduled tenant visits and were given a quick tour of all the centre has to offer. The space looks fantastic and we are now in the process of organising a Towngate Climbing Event for later in the year.

Priding themselves on catering for every age and ability – from beginners right through to competitive climbers, who can take advantage of the competition style routes – both the junior male and female world champions and the adult male and female national champions (the female national champion being one of City Bloc’s very own staff members, Holly Toothill) can be seen training at the centre on a daily basis!

There really is something for everyone; adult coaching, kids’ coaching, kids’ parties and even yoga classes specifically designed for climbers. In terms of the options available for children, the team at City Bloc are keen to show the many benefits aside from the physical, that climbing can offer from a young age – such as improved motor skills, forward thinking and planning skills. There is also a café area serving teas, coffees and delicious cakes for parents to watch on in comfort!

Making the most of their forced closure during the Covid-19 pandemic, the centre went through a full remodel in 2020 which included expanding into two new spaces and creating a dedicated training gym, chill out area and three different wall types.

Another string to their bow is the centre’s safe indoor bike storage system which can accommodate up to 13 bikes. In support of the Low Carbon Emissions Scheme set up by Leeds City Council, City Bloc want to encourage as many of their visitors as possible to travel by bike.

Airedale Industrial Estate benefits from being strategically located, approximately 1.5 miles from Leeds City Centre, just off Hunslet Road (A61) and the Hunslet Distributor.  The property also benefits from being located within 1.5 miles from Junctions 3 and 4 of the M621 Motorway.
