Towngate is proud to be celebrating 60 years of property and to mark this occasion, we have put together a timeline of some of the most memorable moments. Admittedly, it was hard to fit them all in with so many to pick from – but there really is lots to celebrate. 

In recent years we have welcomed many new customers, refurbished and sold properties, developed new industrial units and supported many charities close to our hearts. This reflects the way the business has progressed over the last 6 decades and it has been fascinating looking back and recounting how Towngate has come to be the business we know today.’

In particular, we have our Founder and Chairman David Smith to thank – who, after graduating from Agricultural College and travelling throughout the US to sell poultry equipment, amongst pursuing other business ventures – got a taste for being a landlord and decided to form what is today Towngate Plc in 1962. 

Towngate in Clifton, Brighouse, is David’s place of birth and so became, what is now, a well-recognised name in the industrial and commercial property sector. David sold his two original companies and used the proceeds to invest in commercial property. At the time David purchased several non-essential activities being sold off by the government, such as British Rail freehold properties. Towngate still owns these properties today….
